Invited Addresses

Ty P. Kawika Tengan Ph.D.: The Mana of Veterans: Indigenous Approaches to Healing, Trauma, and Masculinity.
Dr. Tengan is an Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and Anthropology at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. He is an expert on Hawaiin masculinities and has written extensively about the intersections of gender, cultural politics, and nationalism. His current research is focused on the experiences of Native Hawaiians serving in the U.S. military and builds on his major work on the remaking of Hawaiian masculinities and warriorhood in contemporary Hawai’i.

For his invited address he will be discussing his current research on Native Hawaiian veterans by framing them in the context of “mana” a Hawaiian (and Polynesian) term that means spiritual power, authority, prestige, and potency. He will outline indigenous approaches to trauma and healing in Native Hawaiian communities.

Mark Kiselica, Ph.D. The Complicated Worlds of Adolescent Fathers: Implications for Practice, Public Policy, and Research.
Dr. Kiselica is a psychologist, professor of counselor education and vice provost at the College of New Jersey. He is a Fellow and former President of Division 51, a former consulting scholar for the Country Boys Community Engagement Outreach Campaign, and a member of the APA Working Group to Develop Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men. Dr. Kiselica has authored over 140 publications and multiple books on counseling boys and adolescents. Dr. Kiselica is also editor of the Routledge Series on Counseling and Psychotherapy with Boys and Men.

In his invited address Dr. Kiselica will debunk harmful stereotypes about teenage fathers, discuss hardships associated with early paternity, suggest male-friendly ways to help this population, and make recommendations for changes in public policy that would foster the development of young fathers.
