Events: APA Convention - Invited Speakers for 2013

Dr. Ty P. Kawika Tengan is an Associate Professor at the University of Hawai'i with joint appointments in the departments of Ethnic Studies and Anthropology. His interests are in ethnic studies, colonialism, masculinities, and cultural politics in Hawai’i. His major research has centered on the remaking of Hawaiian masculinities and warriorhood and he has published extensively on the intersections of culture & gender in the lives of Hawaiian men.  He is currently working on research into the experiences of Native Hawaiians serving in the military and he has some really interesting qualitative data that has relevance to much of our work.

For his invited address, The Mana of Veterans: Indigenous Approaches to Healing, Trauma, and Masculinity, Dr. Tengan will be discussing his current research on Native Hawaiian veterans by framing them in the context of “mana” a Hawaiian (and Polynesian) term that means spiritual power, authority, prestige, and potency. He will outline indigenous approaches to trauma and healing in Native Hawaiian communities.
